About this site
Why isn’t dance a sport? Why not? By definition, dance is a group or solitary activity in which a successive group of rhythmical steps or bodily motions, or both, are executed to music. (dictionary.com)Any “common” sport, by definition, is an individual or group activity pursued for exercise or pleasure, often involving the testing of physical capabilities and taking the form of a competitive game. Notice how the two definitions are described as group (or team) activities with specific aspects that make each activity unique. Researching further into the two past-times and from personal experience, it is accurate to say that the majority of society believes dance is not a sport. Opposing this belief by correlating these two definitions, dance is very similar to a sport in basic terms. In today’s society and upcoming generations dancers are not being recognized for their abilities, skills, and talents; they are more so overlooked. Today, dance is more recognizable as an art because people are not properly informed on the background of the sport and work ethic of a dancer. Because no one takes the time to become aware of the different aspects of dance, the mass generalization is powerfully bias.
